Server won't Reboot Windows 2012/2016 Supermicro

Windows 2012 step-by-step guide: (2016 below)

If the server is a Supermicro Board with 2012 r2 installed, and whenever you attempt to reboot the server it shuts down instead, then follow these simple steps to resolve this issue:

  1. Go to Device Manager
  2. Go to View -> Show Hidden Devices
  3. Find Intel Management Engine Inteface under System

  4. Uninstall the driver
  5. Reboot the server (You will have to go and physically turn it back on still)
  6. Go to Device Manager again
  7. Show Hidden Devices again
  8. FindPCI Simple Communications Controller under Other Devices, and disable them

  9. Reboot the server to test.
  10. If it works you are all done!

Keep in mind that Windows Update reinstalls the driver back, causing the same issue. Please monitor the updates closely.

Windows 2016 step-by-step guide:

If the server is a Supermicro Board with 2016 installed and you notice it won't reboot after installing updates, this is because it shut down the server instead.
To fix it follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to Device Manager
  2. Go to View -> Show Hidden Devices
  3. Find Intel Management Engine Inteface under System
  4. Uninstall the driver
  5. Turn off automatic updates for driver
    1. Go to system
    2. Click advanced system settings
    3. Click hardware Tab
    4. Click device installation settings
    5. Select "No (your device might not work as expected) "
    6. Click save changes button and exit.
  6. Reboot the server (You will need to physically turn it back on)
  7. Now do another reboot to test as driver isn't loaded anymore
